The Rod Shippey Education Facility and Field Laboratory will serve as the main field research facility for agriculture and natural resources for Northern California. The structural design of the laboratory and multi-purpose spaces consists of wood framed walls with pre-engineered full building width roof trusses with both plywood shear walls and pre-manufactured shear panels. The signature central entry structure joins the two primary spaces and was designed with both steel and timber columns supporting timber framed butterfly trusses. The overall facility design incorporated “green” design and sustainability features, such as use of sustainable materials, natural ventilation and lighting, and water collection and reuse.
